Reflecting on the AWS Fallout (and Why WISER Supports On-Prem)

For those of you who were not living off the grid on Monday this week (October 20th 2025), it was a tough day for the internet.

My e-mail worked, so lots of to do’s but Hubspot was iffy which caused a couple meeting cancellations, and I had many other apps that were just funky. Many items got partially done. Two of my kids called to say they couldn’t do their homework because their apps weren’t working. This puts that poor homework eating dog out of work. My youngest couldn’t watch his favorite show because Disney+ was down. The tragedy.

It was a mildly inconvenient day.

For me.

However, I am sure there were many extremely stressed IT engineers trying to sort all the fallout.  Amazon’s US-EAST-1 data center was taken down by a DNS error in its internal network systems. DNS translates domain names to the actual IP addresses needed to communicate with another computer. Without it, everything stops working. And when everything we know and love is somehow hosted at US-EAST-1, it becomes a very bad day.

While WISER does offer a cloud-based solution, we continue to offer an on-prem solution. For those unfamiliar, on-prem, short for “on-premises”, simply means the solution is hosted locally, within the client’s own network or facility, rather than in the cloud. By comparison, our cloud-based offering makes it much easier for us to monitor and manage things, which saves customers time and offers convenience. However, some of our clients stay with WISER’s on-prem solution for security reasons and so they have complete control. Yesterday was an example of why we still offer that option.

WISER’s on-prem solution doesn’t require internet at all. It simply plugs into a switch on your network, and you, the client, can host it however you want inside your own secure intranet and firewall. No DNS required.

So, if you are in a facility that wants Real Time Location Tracking, where security and being separate from the internet is very important, consider using an on-prem solution like WISER’s. We’d be happy to discuss our solution with you anytime.

And if you are interested in our cloud solution, just know that we use US-EAST-2 (not to be confused with US-EAST-1).

If you are interested in talking with someone from WISER about how we can help at your facility, please feel free to reach out. You can contact us via our website, email, or phone.
