In the article, “No More Hide & Seek”, Alan Richter shares how Danville Metal uses WISER technology to eliminate one of manufacturing’s most frustrating productivity drains: searching for missing gauges.
Danville Metal Stamping performs a wide range of metal processing operations including forming, milling, welding, laser machining, and electrochemical grinding. To make sure all their parts meet precise specifications, Danville uses hundreds of gauges that must be kept properly calibrated.
In a busy shop, with work orders constantly moving between stations (and occasionally returning for rework), gauges had a tendency to wind up in the wrong spot. Skilled employees ended up hunting for tools instead of keeping production moving. Danville was on the lookout for a solution.
After evaluating several options, Danville selected WISER’s real-time location system. WISER delivers sub-meter location accuracy in complex, reflective industrial environments, and does it 24/7. This was what Danville Metal was looking for. With WISER, teams can see asset locations on a live facility floorplan in the WISER Tracker App, or they can integrate the data directly into their MES or ERP system. For Danville’s multi-building layout, the ability to track assets in multiple buildings through the same tool has been especially valuable.
“We have 1,000 tags on hand,” says Jeremy Turner, Gauge Inspector at Danville Metal Stamping. “When a gauge has an assigned tracker tag, I can go right to where it is and get a general location within a couple of feet, including how high off the ground it is.”
With an RTLS solution in place, Danville spends less time searching and more time producing.
