The Alarm That Works When Cameras Fail: WISER in Action

In ancient times, stories were passed down orally from one generation to the next. With the invention of the printing press, books became the most reliable medium for preserving and sharing knowledge. Today, museums have taken on that role. They preserve and share the real, historical artifacts that narrate humanity’s journey. These objects transcend material value and embody our culture, origins, and evolution. They are essential to societal progress through the understanding of our shared history. Their protection is paramount.

Recently, the world was shocked by the devastating theft at the Louvre Museum, where irreplaceable works of art and artifacts were stolen. These pieces are priceless because they are living testimonies of human history. They are markers of where we came from and reflect the struggles we’ve overcome to get here.

In this post, we’ll briefly explore how WISER Systems could have been leveraged to prevent this incident. To be clear: WISER is not the only solution, and its effectiveness depends heavily on staff adherence to strict security protocols. We use WISER as a case study because it’s the technology we build and trust.

But, what is WISER Systems?

WISER Systems is a global leader in cutting-edge real-time physical tracking. Our system delivers instant, live visibility of tagged assets in complex and real-world environments and can even track through walls and obstacles. WISER tags have ultra-low power consumption and their battery life measured in years.

Using ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, our antennas, and tags form a self-organizing wireless mesh. The WISER server software calculates inch-level coordinates from signal data and overlays real-time asset locations directly onto your site map or floor plan. Any asset with a WISER tag is continuously and autonomously tracked within the mesh.

Real-time data integrates seamlessly into existing systems via REST API, Server-Sent Events (SSE), or direct database connections. Many of our clients are manufacturers and when assets go missing, schedules slip, or compliance deadlines approach, costs skyrocket in dollars, but also and, more critically, in trust. Many operations suffer from location blind spots, forcing reactive firefighting. WISER eliminates that. Our precision tracking and real-time location intelligence empower teams to prevent delays, protect critical assets, ensure compliance, and boost efficiency.

How Does WISER Help Museums?

WISER can apply the same spatial awareness it provides to factories and yards to museums as well. Our team supports the full deployment of our system: from antenna installation to strategic tag placement and zone configuration. The system operates with four core entities, antennas, tags, zones, and rules. Any unexpected movement, zone exit/entry, or proximity to an antenna can trigger instant alerts. Our system can even trigger alerts if a tag is tampered with or its battery is removed.

WISER is integration-ready out of the box: no need to replace existing systems. We also do not interfere with active Bluetooth of WiFi Systems. Our REST and SSE APIs connect with security platforms, access control, or custom dashboards. We also offer full integration support as a Service if you want us to build or assist with those connection for you.

Hypothetical Scenario: How WISER Would Have Responded at the Louvre

In the case at the Louvre, if a tagged were moved, the WISER system would have detected it immediately, overcoming any blindspots due to mis-oriented cameras or lack of staffing.

  1. Instant Detection: A tag on a priceless artifact moves or exits from its secure zone.
  2. Alert Triggered: WISER sends an immediate notification with tag, zone, or nearest antenna data, depending on rule configuration and trigger.
  3. Integrated Response:
    • The museum’s monitoring center receives the alert in real time.
    • Security personnel are dispatched instantly to the affected area.
    • Cameras in the zone are prioritized on all control room screens.
    • Police are notified of an active incident.
  4. Even if cameras are obstructed (spray paint, smoke, sabotage):
    • UWB tracking does not rely on line-of-sight.
    • Live location data streams to the WISER client or a custom dashboard.
    • Coordinates can be overlaid directly onto camera feeds in real time.

With WISER, the museum wouldn’t just respond to a theft, it would stop it in its tracks. This would create a second layer of protection for valuable artifacts in the building.

However, a real-time location tracking solution would offer an additional benefit. The next evolution in protection lies in understanding the patterns of the museum. Each person and object in a museum has a rhythm: when an area is patrolled, how patrons move around, and if an artifact is handled how it is handled. Over time, that rhythm becomes a signature of normal behavior. When that pattern shifts, such as, a security guard being absent or a window being opened, the system detects that and can raise a quiet signal. This kind of intelligence turns security from reaction into anticipation. Because the museum owns its historical data, it can review that data over time to see where there may be gaps in security. Museums can then better plan how to improve security for the greatest control. The result is a calm network of awareness that remains silent through normal motion but speaks clearly when something feels wrong.

Our Experience

WISER’s experience in defense includes RTLS contracts with the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, and U.S. Navy. WISER has also provided real-time location solutions for multiple civilian agencies in the U.S. Government as well as three leading aerospace / defense contractors. Furthermore, WISER has participated in many DoD-sponsored field trials and closed demonstrations at U.S. Army, Air Force, and Naval bases as well as joint command operations such as Trident Spectre.

At WISER Systems, we don’t build security systems, we build unmatched real-time location intelligence. We’re the infrastructure layer that makes any system smarter. Our solution is flexible across a range of industries and use cases and we’d love the opportunity to discuss your unique challenge with you.
